Blind Faith

I’m supposed to tell you about Linda’s abortion. That’s what these two little words mean.

How can I tell you what they mean? It wasn’t your abortion, or mine. I can’t even tell you what they meant to Linda. I can only tell you what I observed.

I saw someone who already had three kids faced with a situation she knew was impossible. She was barely getting by as a waitress at a pizza joint. She was divorced from the father of her three kids, who also happened to be molesting her children, a girl and two boys.

That she hadn’t meant to get pregnant, but was so convinced no one would love her that she was desperate to prove herself wrong.

So she had the abortion.

Then I saw what the abortion did to her.

It drove her further into depression. At one time Linda had been a happy girl, who always wore a smile and was quick to laugh. After the abortion, when I looked into her eyes I saw a depth of pain. Despair had settled over her like a cloud. It paled her view of everything, and ours of her.

That when she met Daniel she thought things would be different. And I saw the smiles and the laughter return.

When she got pregnant a fifth time she was convinced that this child would make up for the abortion. God was giving her a second chance, she told me.

That’s not how I saw it.

Daniel left her, but she held on to the belief that God had looked down and smiled upon her, blessing her with a fifth child, the replacement for the fourth.

That belief has carried her through the last twenty years.
